TopCarmen Anthony Vacalebre is a lifelong resident of Waterbury, Connecticut. He grew up in the Brooklyn section of town, and attended local schools. When the "business bug" bit Carmen, he decided to try his hand at the restaurant business, and joined a growing national chain, which sent him off to college... and thus, armed with his degree in "Hamburgerology" from McDonald's University, his career began.

TopThe tradition of Drescher’s began in 1868 when German immigrant Charles Miller opened “Miller’s Saloon” on lower Grand Street. When Charlie Miller died in 1873, his wife Caroline, managed the business until approximately 1880. Charlie’s younger brother, William, took over the business and moved it to Harrison Alley.

J. Alfred Drescher, who immigrated from Zurich, Switzerland, and Frederick Keil, from Mannheim, Germany, purchased the business in 1894. Frederick Keil had previously married Charlie Miller’s daughter Mary. They changed the name to Drescher and Keil.

TopThe many changes have made people forget the South Main Street of years ago and the businesses that existed here. It is hard to remember just what Pepes, Ortones, Orchid Florist, Nardelli's and many others looked like. This article will try to help you remember a little bit about Nardelli's Grocery Store and the grinders that they made famous.

In 1914, three brothers left a small town in Italy in search of better life in America. Like many other immigrants they were young, ambitious and frightened but learned very quickly to survive.

Joseph, the oldest, worked in a sweatshop to support his brothers Anthony and Fred. Soon, all three were working. They worked long hours and pooled whatever money they had to send back home to help their parents. Poor working conditions caused Joe to lose his finger in the shop and he swore he would get his brothers and find new work. Soon they were working in what eventually became Nardelli's Grocery Store on South Main.

TopFor over sixty years, 711 South Main Street has been an address in Waterbury where hundreds of residents and out-of-towners have partaken in delicious foods and have gathered for many memorable occasions.

First established in 1937 by the Lemieux family, the restaurant provides a distinctive, yet home-like atmosphere. In 1956, Isadore Bisaillon took over and continued to served popular meals, especially catering to the crowds who worked in nearby factories (many working double shifts) who desired to lunch in a comfortable atmosphere. In 1984, Bill and Annie (Rita) Tomasiewicz (niece of Isadore Bisaillon) acquired the eatery, added space, expanded the fare, and have continued to carry on the distinction of fine, home-style cuisine. It is now one of the most popular dining places in this section of the city.
